Can I wash a featherbed at home besides taking it to the drycleaners?
Question:I have some stains and I really would rather wash it at home but what is the best solution what should I use to make it very clean
Answers:
You really should dry-clean it. The feathers inside contain oils that can really stain your feather bed. I would buy one of those at-home dry cleaning kits and take it to a laundromat where they have large dryers, and use the kit.
You have to take it to the dry cleaners if you don't want to ruin it. It cant get wet. A dry cleaners cleans it in a machine with dry chemicals, no water!!
If it is only spots you are worried about,,,,Try some power spray from wal-mart on the spots let dry... then spraysuper odor eliminator on it and try to lay it in the sun for several hours...If it is really bad.! you may want to make a new cover for it
You never want to wash a feather bed at home. If the feathers get wet, they will stick together and mat. Check the tag to see if dry cleaning is OK. If not, all you can do is air it out and spot clean. What you use to spot clean depends on what the stain is.
I throw anything and everything into the washer (leather athletic shoes and jackets) taking it to the Laundromat to use the large machines if need be. It can be tough to get the feathers and down redistributed evenly, but the washing itself doesn't harm it.
I have washed down comforters and have never had them stain or clump. I put them in the gentle cycle with a cold/cold setting. Then I put them in the dryer with a couple of clean canvas sneakers. This makes a heck of a racket, but it does work great for fluffing up the feathers.
Only thing you have to check is that you don't have any holes, even pinhole size holes will allow feathers to excape.
The only reason you can't do it at home is the size of it. Take it to the laundry and use one of the front loaders. Dry it, with a pair of sneakers. There is NO oil in the feathers. The feathers have gone through a process that removes it all. Don't waste your money on drycleaning.
When you're done, buy, or make, a cover. This will prevent most new stains.
