How does one best keep jeans and denim jackets soft so that it is easier to wear and fold away?

Question:I'm talking about the denim material, particularly those "old" jeans that sometimes gets very hard and difficult to fold and wear. Would putting fabric softener help reduce this "hardness" of the denim? What other ways to eliminate this problem.

Answers:
I suggest overdoing the softener. Use a detergent with fabric softener, then use actual fabric softener, and then dry with a fabric softener sheet. Make sure the jeans are fully dry before removing from the dryer.

Denim is really not made to be soft. It is a twill material and twill is strong and not soft against the skin. So trying to make it soft is going against what it is naturally supposed to feel like. Usually, when you have "soft" denim, it has been processes and finished to create that specific feel.

Fabric softener does help a little, but I find that the stiffness still happens after air drying my denim. After it's all dry I throw them into the dryer with a fabric softener sheet for about 5-10 minutes and this helps me.
Yes fabric softener in the wash and you can also add some water softener (available in the laundry aisle at the grocery store).
