You hit the nail on the head. Baking soda is not only still the best despite all the more "specialty" items, but it's also the cheapest and the most eco friendly.
Sprinkle baking soda onto carpet areas and let it sit for 15 minutes before vacuuming (a little longer for really strong odors). Be sure to check for color fastness first.
Check out www.armhammer.com for all kinds of eco friendly tips and cleaning "recipes" using baking soda. Very nice for the pocket book as well. :)
I believe Home Depot/Lowes/Menards sells a great product by Capture for Pet stains and Odors. Check it out !http://www.captureclean.com/captureclean...
First determine what the smell is. If its just general dog smell Febreeze works wonders. They even make one that kills bacteria. See the smell comes from bacteria. If it is pet urine, that's an entire different story. First buy a black light. (they sell them at the pet store starting at $10.00) Use this to spot urine stains, they glow under the light. As far as a product to eliminate the urine you can get them at the grocery store, pet store, etc. I recommend talking to your vet. They generally carry the better products that actually work. I used a product for my cats once. I'm very sorry, I don't remember the name. But it comes in a white can with a green circle on the front. That was the ONLY thing that eliminated the stain and odor. It sells for around $15 a can. Next time you are at a Petco, Pet Supplies Plus, etc ask the groomers what they use. Generally those shampoos will keep doggy smelling "fresher" longer.
Since it is new carpet, you probably shouldn't get anything ground into it, as baking soda would do. Try some Renuzit spray on refresher. It works the same way as Febreeze, but doesn't have a heavy scent. Make sure to vacuum often, since pet dander and hair are contributing to the aroma!
Good luck!
There's also a product called Nature's Miracle, use that on pet urine, vomit, or feces accidents.
