Why do we blame the dryer for lost socks?

Question:Why is it we always say "the dryer ate my sock" and not the washer ate my sock? Has anyone really ever stopped to if both socks survive the washer?

Answers:
its a psychological thing

cuz they do!!! they eat them.
Because the dryer is the last stop because you would probably know if the washer had eaten it, seeing as the washer is first.
Good point.
I blame my hamper with the hole in it! Because I'm in an apartment so I have to walk kind of far and things always fall out of my hamper hole!
Because some dryers are evil that way.
Because the dryer is evil. Plus, you've got to blame someone (or something!).
Because anybody with an IQ over 50 knows those damn dryers eat our socks. There is no other explanation.
lol...i say both
Well if you must know the secret, there are tiny hamsters that live in both washers and dryers and if they haven't been fed, they will eat clothing... socks are their favorite by far. So if a sock is missing, know that it went to the 'starving hamsters association' and maybe it will be a tax write off!
I think what really happens usually is that the sock gets lost before it even gets to the washer. Like on the floor under the bed or behind the hamper...
On the other hand, we don't check to see if two went into the washer, either, do we? Jeez, maybe I actually did leave one somewhere!
There was a bit on MadTV about this, where the character Dot went into the dryer and found all her lost socks and gloves and stuff.

When a sock goes missing, I usually look to see if the dog went off with it somewhere. Cute little bad girl, carrying socks around in her mouth...I love that little bad girl even when she leaves my socks all spitty.
aha good question. maybe cause the washer is filled with water and no one lieks to stick their hand in dirty wash water to see whats inside until it drains. once it drains the clothes are too wet to look through, once you get it out of the dryer and finally realize somethigns gone, you automaticlly assume thats what ate it. lol. =]
We need to investigate that your right, maybe we have been blaming the wrong machine all this time.
that should cause the government to spend 2 billion investigateing the washer dryer crissis.
After a few trillion they figured out last year that men think different than women?
What man would have seen that coming?
shhh the sock monster will hear ya, and everyone knows the washer only eats cell phones wallets and other items of high value, dryers have been known to eat the odd towel (so I was told, miss you lucky towel) but socks are its # 1 stapel.
Peace
the laundry God Clorox hides the socks sometimes just to play games with your mind.
I have lost more than just socks to the wickedness of dryers and washers!!! How dare they! What? Are they trying to stay warm or something? Do they REALLY need them for their metal feet? Geeeeeeeeesh!

I want back my socks! and my... *&^%$
Because they really do get "eaten" by the dryer. I have had work done on my dryer and when they opened it up there were several socks and a pair of underwear. That was not the problem with dryer either. The repairman said that they always are in there. They get rolled in between the tumbler and the back wall.
because it is the dryer
every time i clean ...like really clean my lint trap i always pull out all sorts of kids/baby socks..never mine nor my husbands but..the lint trap eats the lil ones!

now the real question is..if i buy only one type of sock per person in my house..why am i always finding all sorts of socks i have never bought? i have a pillow case full of "not my families" socks that i take to my moms every once in a while..to put in her not matched sock pile..(haha)

really where do they come from? i have my own washer and dryer?? hrm??
