Help! Mold or weird looking white stuff problem!?
Question:I was cleaning my room when I moved a futon that was leaning on the wooden wall only to find really gross looking white stuff on it and everywhere on the wall. What do I do?? My parents aren't home and can't help.
Answers:
The white stuff isn't dangerous. It's just mildew probably. It's the back mold that is harmful. Wear a mask or bandana over your face, and put on some work gloves. Clean the wall with 1/2 bleach, 1/2 water. Let it sit at least ten minutes, than rinse with water. If the futon is wood, the bleach can harm it.Use murphy oil soap on your futon frame, if it is wood. If you can't clean the futon mattress cover, spray it with lysol disinfectant. It's got to be an improvement over the way it is now!
It is really according to the type of wall.
Whatever you do, don't touch it.
I would wait until your parents come home. It could be a leak. The source of the problem needs stopped.
Where do our parents keep going? Well, sounds like you might have a bit of a moisture problem, I would start by moving everything away from the wall, give it some clean air to breathe, it may not be that bad, wood has a tendency to change to white with moisture, leave it a while and see if the colour returns to normal. Have you got a fan? Put on the ceiling one or a small oscillating one. Can you take the futon outside to the sun for a while, maybe the fluff is just sticking to the wall, especially if the wooden wall has some old urethane stain on it.? If you think that may be the problem, take a rag and soak it in a little paint thinner, Varsol, and just wipe the wall. Once everything is dry, just make up the bed and keep it a little way a way from the wall this time.
