Ive had my ionic breeze for awhile and really liked. It give off a nice fresh air smell. I stopped using it (kinda forgot in the order of it when I moved) for about a year. I then plugged it rear in and ran it continuously for a week or more. Cleaning it when needed. All the sudden it started giving rotten this bizarre odor. I cant really describe it except for it almost smells like dirty dish water. I stopped using it for roughly 8 more months because of this and then started using it in the room near my birds. It gave off alike smell. I cleaned it over and over and no difference. I decided if I ran it continuously conceivably the smell would "work its way out". That hasnt happened. Now after some googling I found out it is potentially unsafe. The stuff I read said it be ozone, but the ozone gave off the fresh smell. So what is giving rotten this terrible smell? It gives me headache and now Im worried for myself and my birds (2 budgies and a cockatiel). In the future should I step with an air filter/hepa filter etc? Thanks for any info roughly this mystery smell and a good course of action.
Answers: I dont know what this picky odor is. However, ozone is a toxic gas, and exotic birds are much more sensitive to pollutants than humans. I would switch to a HEPA-based air cleaner (which would remove particulates) or a unit that also have a carbon filter (which hits the gasses). It will remove dust and dander from the birds, and protect the birds from pollutants.
