How can I clean the bottom of my iron?

Use a Brillo pad. It's an abrasive so it will scratch your iron. If you don't want the scratches you can use relaxer while the iron is hot. Just dip a rag in the relaxer and wipe it off. Make sure you fold the rag or your fingers will get burned. The relaxer gets off the tough stuff on the iron. If it isn't that bad just use water.

with a damp cloth when the iron is on, make sure the cloth is think though other wise you'll get burned!!
Wire wool/Brillo when switched off and well rinsed off afterwards
Make sure its cold, then get a green scrubbing cloth with abit of washing up liquid and gentlely rub.
Take a used blade and scrape away the accumulated dirt. That way the iron will become clean.
i use a pot scraper when the iron is slightly warm
Get those flat green or brown nylon scrub sheets at any store. you can cut them into smaller squares. use on cold dry iron. you can also use them on pans to get the dark off the bottom and the baked on stuff from any non-teflon pans
I use steel wool while warm.
My favorite product for that type of thing is "Easy Off Bam". The new stuff is awesome...I use it on everything. Spray it right on the bottom of the iron while it is a little warm, then rub off after a feww minutes with a green scrubbing cloth! Works like a charm!
Wait for iron to cool.. use the green side of a washing up sponge and some liquid, clean gently and the rinse using a damp cloth. Do this regularly to keep the surface clean and smooth. Don't use knives or anything sharp like that, even melted plastic comes off with the above method.
They make iron cleaners
I use a bit of screwed up tin foil when the iron is on, make sure you hold it in a tea towel or something though, as it gets hot REALLY quickly!!
use a folded peice of cotton , heat iron, use a white candle .melt candle with iron on to cotton, smooth the iron over the melted wax until the botton is clean,
Damp cloth works very well just water on it whilst iron is on.
ther is a special cleaning cloth for this purpose. I think you can get it from John Lewis, Eazyclean catalogue, etc.
with course salt and a cork stopper, its also good to clean knives.
