How do you get all that food from the bottom of a garbage disposal?
Question:When I use my garbage disposal, food stays at the bottom (where you put the food through) and it doesn't go down. I've tried pouring alot of water down there to get it to all go down, but it doesn't help. What can I do about the excess food, because its starting to have a smell.
Answers:
Throw a tray of ice cubes (just the ice, not the tray...LOL) down the disposal after you use it.
I know you can buy garbage disposal cleaner at the store, but I don't know how you'd get the excess food out of there...But the cleaner is supposed to get rid of old food smells and give it a clean scent.
if it isn't all going down, it is either clogged somewhere or need repair/replace.
there are cleaners for the disposal, but they deodorize them.
good luck :)
My dad made this up. Ok if you have an ice machine in your Fridge that makes ice (i don't think cubes will work) Then what you do is put some ice in the sink (shove it down into the disposal) and turn it on. then run it with some cold watter. Hope full it should rid the excess food. if not try it again.
do not put fibers in there, banana skins, onion skins, any meat -- if it is not going away turn it off and reach in there and pull the junk out. The blades are not that sharp and it won't eat you if you don't turn it on.
If your disposer isn't getting rid of the food it isn't working properly. I would call a plumber if you don't feel comfortable working on it yourself, but there is certainly something worng. To temporarily mask the scent, buy some lemon's, cut one into quarters and throw a piece into the grinder and let it rip. It should freshen your grinder for at least a day. It's not a great solution, but lemon's are fairly cheap.
Unplug it. REPEAT UNPLUG IT..then try to clear it with your hand. I use a garden glove that is already messed up to do this. If it runs clear and then clogs again then you need to watch what you put in it and how much you put in it. Perhaps yours needs to be replaced with a more powerful one.
I hate to ask this question, but I feel I must...
Are you flipping the switch and turning on the water when you feed the garbage to your disposal?
If you just slapped your forehead, then problem solved...if you smiled, my good deed for the day is done...if you were insulted, please accept my apology.
It does sound as if you are in need of a repairman or you may just need to replace the entire unit. Sometimes that is more economical than calling a repairman...and it eliminates the stink. However, the repairman may be the best way to go if you are "going green". (One less unit to dispose of.)
Pour bleach for the smell. are you running water while disposal is on?
