How can I remove the smell of cat pee from the house?

Question:The previous owners had 2 cats that never went outside. I have thrown out the carpets and underlay but the house still stinks a little. It's probably soaked into the floors (wood and concrete).

Answers:
I had this problem and worse when I moved into my house. Scrub the floors with vinegar. Scrub the concrete with bleach and vinegar, separately. Sprinkle the floors with arm and hammer baking soda. Air out the house. If this does not work you might have to do what I had to do. I had to rip up the hardwood floors because the smell was soaked into the floor boards. I then scrubbed the wooden floor boards with vinegar. Let it dry and then painted and sealed the subfloor with Kilz Original. Then place new flooring down. I had to still go into my basement and paint the subfloor in some sections to seal the smell in. There is no smell in my house anymore!

BTW. I bought a house that a drug addict lived in, there was blood on the walls, he would urinate on the floor instead of going to the bathroom, and he had a dog, and multiple cats. So if I can get the smell out with all those problems, you can definitely do it.

Try spraying it with soda water from a soda syphon to start (if you know where it is)
There is something which nursing homes use that's very effective, to get rid of the smell of human urine.
Perhaps call into one and ask for advice.
squeeze a fresh lemon over it
You have to seal the floors. First, clean them really well using a 50/50 mix of vinegar/water. After this dries, you will need to seal the pores in the flooring. If the flooring is to be covered up (IE, new carpet installed) then any paint should seal it. If the floors are to be left exposed, then that is a much harder job and depends on the actual flooring material.

After this is completed, if you still smell anything, rent an Ozone generator from a tool rental store and run it while the place is empty. Ozone is not good for you, but will turn back to Oxygen withing 1/2 hour of shutting down the machine. Run it for at least 8 hours, shut it off, then wait 1/2 hour or more to go back in.
There are all kinds of chemicals you can use, but I kind of like the natural route myself. Try white vinegar. I usually use that and mothballs under my porch in the summer (I have 7 outdoor cats and none of them like each other!) You may have to use the vinegar a few times if the odor is strong, but you shouldn't get sick from the fumes. Besides, smells better than cat pee!!
Kill the cats.
This may sound daft, but place a few onions that have been cut in half around the house - they seem to absorb the smell (admittedly your house will smell of onions, but that smell doesn't hang around when you remove them)
bi carb mixed to paste and srub or neat wasin up liquid straight on stain and scrub
there is a product called "odoban" it is a enzyme that actively
"eats" the source of the odor. it is used in areas like pet shops, nursing homes, hotels and the like.
I had this problem when I moved into my house. I moped the floor boards with water and bleach. i let it dry and repeated until the smell was gone I think it was about 3 days for the smell to go also you can buy a carpet cleaner with a special enzyme to break down the cat urine you could also try this.
Simple Solution Odor Remover has enzymes which 'digest' the stain and smell. Obtainable in US and UK from pet shops or www.simplesolution.com
Oh my god, i feel for you on this one lol. When i moved in my flat the girl who lived here before had 2 cats and a cat flap. All the cats off the estate used to come in here and ree all over.It smelt disgusting, it was awful.I ripped up the carpets and it was worse.I got a bottle of jeyes fluid and i mixed some of it in a spray bottle with water and soaked the floor and stairs in it.I did it for a week or so, and although it was a strong smell itself it got rid of the smell.Dont water it down too much, if you can put up with the smell of the jeyes it will be fine.I live in a cat pee smell free zone now lol.
The bottom of the stairs was worse for mecos the stray cats used to come in and pee there so i put the jeyes down undiluted.
Good luck and i promise you jeyes does work if you dont mind the strong smell,it goes off after a bit though.
