Sounds nasty. I had problems getting out something even worse - cat urine. Talk about stubborn! Here is what worked for me. I vacuumed the area thoroughly. Then I went out and rented a carpet steamer. (I know own one. I love that thing!)
Once I steam cleaned the area with the suggested cleaning fluid and let the carpet dry thoroughly, I went back and recleaned it using vinegar diluted in water. It smelled a bit like vinegar until it completly dried, but after that, no odor! I diluted the vinegar at a rate of a cup of vinegar to a half gallon of water.

Dead Cricket smell? I would shampoo the area and use baking soda in the area to help it neutralize the smell!
Get a carpet cleaner, each tank of water you use add about a 3rd of a cap of ur favorite liquid fabric softener along with the carpet shampoo.This works great, also for a cheap air freshener, I use a small cap of downy in just a spray bottle full of water, it smells awesome all day long and you can spray ur furniture, carpet walls and even the clothes hanging in ur closet.
But it really works great with carpet cleaning.and the smell last along time. spray ur carpet before vacuuming and let it set for a few minutes.
