What is the best method for removing odor from outside trash can?
Question:My outside trash can is rank! I have washed it out, but there is still a funky smell. Any ideas of what else I can do to remove the bad smell?
Answers:
I would wash it out after filling it with warm soapy water and bleach and letting it stand for a couple of hours in that. Then wash thoroughly with a good scrub brush or sponge (toss sponge when done).
Then set it out in direct sunlight and let it air out a couple of days without the lid to let the sunshine give it a natural de-odorizing.
Spray the inside of the can with febreeze before putting trash in. Always use a disposal or compost to get rid of food garbage. If not possible, then put food garbage into plastic containers or ziplock bags or even old plastic grocery bags, tie them up good. The food garbage container can be placed in the overall trash bag, but tie it up individually on a daily basis. Also it doesn't hurt to add a little baking soda to the trash to absorb odors.
Use a Lysol spray and douse it.
throw it away
Douse it with Bleach & Water combo ... it will help.
Wash out with bleach and water let set if the smell donsn't go away the first time.
soap, hot water, and bleach to wash, then air dry standing open.
I found the perfect product for this that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a natural carbon product called FRIDGE IT carbon odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays, and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Just clip one or two to the inside/side of trash bin.. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including large outside trash bins, car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and internet. Definitely worth tryin
Before and after adding trash try sprinkling the inside of the can with powered lime. This can be found at most hardware stores or garden centres. This will reduce odours and also reduce the amount of flies around your garbage. And it never hurts to wash out your cans as often as possible. While local stores may have cleansers for interior use, try to locate a dealer for industrial strenght cleaners. Sometime an auto parts store will carry these for cleaning vehicle undercarriages. Be such to follow the directions and wear protective clothing as many of these are dangerous, but you will not have to use them frequently. If your cans are plastic you may have to use them more frequently than if the cans are metal as plastic cans can absorb and retain the bacteria that cause the odours. If nothing else, try spraying them inside after emptied with straight bleach. Be very careful with this as it is very dangerous to breath the fumes, so do it outside with a slight breeze blowing. After that wash them regularly. More in warmer climates. Hope that helps.
I've found that if bleach and water dont help try sprinkling the trash can with baking soda it does wonders for odors just like it does in your refrig
Try spraying it with Approach. I use it on my trash bins cause that's where I put my doggy bags and such. I spray the inside and out with the spray and it eliminates the odor completely.
Give it a shot it's a miracle worker.
Good luck!
I would clean it out with bleach and water. Let it dry and put baking soda in it.
