Towels smell?

Question:Seems no matter how many times I wash and rewash towels they stink. They have a mildew smell. I have tried amonia and other things. Does anyone have any idea what to use? Even if they smell good out of the dryer when you go to dry off with one they smell.

Answers:
If you live in a damp part of the country - your towels will mildew and once they get it in them, it is impossible to kill all the mildew without bleaching them. Liquid Lysol and Pinesol helps in the wash but not like bleach.
After everyone uses their towels it is really important to hang them up if they are damp. I found towel racks dont work as they trap the damp. They need to be hung outdoors or somewhere where they can air out well. NEVER throw damp towels in the dirty clothes. They will mildew.
I have solved the problem by buying only nice white towels and bleaching them like the hotels do. You also should only buy thinner cotton towels and not the fat fluffy ones as they never dry well. Dont use fabric softeners too much as that keep the towels from drying out well. Some people dont notice it but I agree - yuck!

are you sure they are really good and dry when you fold them and put them away? I would try some vinegar if the amonia didnt do any good
BLEACH!
You should try and wash them in a Dettol- antiseptic will work best
If I leave my clothes in the washer for more than a day before drying them they will smell pretty bad. Other than that I don't know maybe it's your water. When was the last time your water filter has been changed?
don't leave them sitting in the washer, once it stops go ahead and throw them in the dryer, and make sure they are all the way dry before putting them away! oh and try to use some fabric softner for better smell!
Hot Hot water (you may need to boill it and then add to your machinre) AND SCENTED SHAVING CREAM aggitate it well add towels and soak...it works
You may be leaving them in the washer too long, or the smell may be coming from your linen closet or wherever you keep your towels.
Are you sure the towels are completely dry when taken out of the dryer? Of course they will have a good scent when taken out of the dryer, but if they are not completely dry, when you go to use the towel, there will be a mildew scent. Add baking soda to your wash, maybe that will take away the smell.
Use a good smelling detergent like Gain original scent .Then
when rinsing use a strong liquid fabric softner,I prefer Downy.
Then use a fabric softner dryer sheet, like Bounce. Bounce can be bought with different levels of strenght,it's listed on the boxes. My towels are a variety of colors, always smell great ,are dry (even though I use fabric softner) and are oh,soooo soft.Regular bleach is good on WHITES only!
Use sparingly, prolonged or excessive use and the bleach will "eat" your laundry!
Yup, bleach. Color-safe bleach is not the same as good old sodium hypochlorite. It doesn't kill the mold like regular bleach does.

I stopped buying colored towels because of the awful smell they eventually get. White and beige are the way to go. Bleach them every time you wash them.

If I were you I'd throw those old towels out.
it might be something in your washer causing the smell. I fix them for a living and saw a similar problem once. I had the lady run an empty load , ie no clothes and add a jar of tang, yes the breakfast drink, to the wash cycle. it got rid of the smell for her.
Bleach - even a little bit won't hurt colors or baking soda and lots of soap.
hang them outside

theyll be stiff but they wont smell I PROMISE<3
