Ive cleaned carpet for a couple of years surrounded by college. Ive hired out a professional company to clean my own carpet. I firmly believe you can do a better situation doing it yourself with a rental unit.
Most hardware stores own them - ACOs, True Values, Mom & Pop Hardware stores. Also, you can find them at Home Depots, Lowes, even Kroger, Meijer, Walmart and chains.
If all else fails, try your local rental company where on earth you can rent tools and equipment.

Most hardware-DIY hire them.I prefer them too a professional clean as i hold had some shockers cleaning my carpet.If you put a wool dust preferably with eucalyptus in the wool rinse out your stains come out really easily and your carpets smell great. Focus/ B&G hire them out also Sketchlys dry Cleaners.....not sure on price
Most DIY stores hire perfect machines out i rented one from johnsons the cleaners, not sure if you have them where you are but if you own they are very good i use it adjectives time now
