How do I clean rust and grime off old metal weights?

Question:When i was younger my dad had an insane amount of weights that he used for his own personal gym. I guess he never needed them anymore and stored them up in my barn. They have been up there for years and after taking them out, it's clear that they have rusted over and become very grimey.

How do i clean these weights so they look better, maybe even new? What sort of product do i need, or will some water and detergent do the trick?

Answers:
Try some WD-40...=)

i would try a wire brush on them 1st to loosen all the rust, then clean them with water and detergent
CLR works well.
sos pads
At home depot they have a product called Jelly Belly and Iron Out it will help to get the rust right out. Just please read the instructions on the bottle it is potent stuff!
rust will come off with wire brush and clr. if they will be painted after removing rust use os-pho from local paint store. just paint it on wait and rinse. after item has dried paint with enamel with rust inhibitor added to enamel.
