A professional is the best.

Synthetic carpet fibers do best, (come cleaner, spring back) when hot (185 degree) soapy water is sprayed into the carpet, then vacuumed out.

Some rental cleaners brush your carpet, unravelling the twist, thereby reducing the life of the carpet.

The ones that don't have brushes are on the right track, but the water can't stay hot enough and they don't have the power that truck mounted units have.
