Answers:
Start with three large containers. Mark one KEEP, one SELL and one TRASH. After the yard sale take what is left to Goodwill or Salvation Army.

Get a few large cardboard boxes. Label them: Garage Sale, Keep, Charity. Then start with one piece at a time until you can see your floor again. Then look into your clothes closet and get rid of clothing you do not wear anymore. Put that in the Charity Box. Then sort out and put jeans together, blouses, tops, jackets, skirts. Buy shoe racks and place shoes neatly. Also shoe bags behind your door will help alot. Also, buy a nice wicker hamper. When you have an article of clothing that is dirty, just place it in there till laundry day. All your makeup should be in your bathroom. If you have to put your makeup on in your bedroom, then buy a large makeup case and neatly place only the makeup you use in there and when you are done, put it away in your closet. Get rid of all makeup you do not use. Do not throw anything on the floor. Books should be placed on bookshelves. If you do not have any, buy them and have them mounted. Clear off all your dressers, make your bed every day and vacuum and dust once a week.
You need to go and buy some very large hefty trash bags. Start sorting! Throw away old papers in one, clothes in another and books that you want to get rid of. Put other things that you want to see in large cardboard boxes. After you are done with your yard sale have the Goodwill come and pick everything up. They love to have clothes and books and toys. A good rule of thumb for clothes is, if you haven't worn it in a year get rid of it. I know it may be hard but trust me you won't miss it. The same goes with books and such.
Here are some other tips that others may not have mentioned:
- When I was a kid there was this book that my mom had with this process (I used it until I was 21 since it was such a good process!). You make your bed FIRST. Then that is clean, clear, out of your way and you have a small SUCCESS to begin.
- Then go through with a garbage bag and throw most everything away. :) Use black bags so you cannot see what is in it again and go back. When 3 bags fill up, take a water break and go dump them outside in the garbage cans.
- Grab all your hangers and either 1) hang them in the closet and as you come across something that needs to be hung (in the next step having to do with clothes), you can hang it. or 2) (and this is what I do) pile all the hangers on your new clean bed and when you need to hang something you grab the hanger from the bed.
- Go through and grab all the clearly dirty clothes and either: put them in the hamper, OR, put them in WHITE garbage bags sorted by color (for me I had to do this since I had so much).
- Do the box ideas like the other ladies mentioned. But also, have a basket or anything you can use for things that go "in other rooms of the house" and one for "bathroom/hair/body/makeup" items. Then you aren't running back and forth a million times and when it's time to go put it all away at once it goes way faster.
- At this point you should be looking and feeling pretty good.
- Now start at the doorway and choose to go right or left :-) Once you pick, just begin picking things up to put away. Once you pick it up you MUST put it away!

Some other things I learned that helped:
* Do not read any notes/letters if you find them. Do not read old papers, etc. either. Just keep going, throw them in a box, and move on.
* Don't stop to try to fix something. Put it in the box if you want to keep or get rid of it/sell it.
* Don't stop to look through a magazine that you find. Also, if you have a lot of books or magazines, clear off a shelf to put them on. Or put them in a box or a big paper shopping bag for now and you can hang a shelf or get a bookcase later.
* Don't stop mid-stream to "super organize" something crazy. I would get distracted and decide to come up with an ABC order for my videotapes or something. Or, start organizing my closet by color when the whole rest of the room was a mess.
* Turn up the tunes! Anything to keep you motivated and spunky.
* Don't chat with people on the phone or online. It really drags you down, I swear. If someone wants to help, they should just come over to help out or keep you company (but not distract ya).
*inbetween each major task. like when you are done with garbage and then move to something else, take a moment to go get a snack and throw in another load of laundry.
* Toward or at the end, you will need to clear a space in your drawers to put your new/clean laundry so it doesn't get all knocked over, unfolded, etc.

:-) Smile and be proud of yourself. You can do it!

Hope this helps!
