Can I sand my vinyl floor?

Question:My kitchen floor was inplace when we bought this fixer uper. It is a commercial grade black and white vinyl floor. It was in a very dirty condition. Probably never washed in about 4 years, with a family and many animals on it, tracking in dirt, mud, poop, and other grosseties!

I am trying to get it clean. I have tried vinegar & water, Shaklee Basic H (household), Shaklee Basic G (germacide), Shaklee Basic I (industrial), I have even tried a strong Bleach & water. I can wash this floor as many as 4 times in a row and the water is still black when I pour it out. It has very little wax on it. After I wash it and it dries, I still feel grit on my feet. And the white tiles are still discolored.

How do I get rid of the grit? Can I sand it?

Answers:
I would try a floor scrubber, but I wouldn't sand it as that may ruin the tile that is under the grime/grit. It could just sand it right down past the white tile that is suppose to be there.

You can get/rent a floor scrubber, be prepared to have to mop it up as you go.

Or you could just replace the vinyl tiles, it may be less B S doing that as it's going to be a lot of work.

Good luck. If you decide to replace the tile, they have a machine that can remove the tiles a lot faster than if you do it by hand.

Vinyl sucks. You can't sand it because you will see the scratch marks and it will get dull. Have you tried regular old bleach? If it's really old, you might just be better off replacing it... it isn't that expensive, and may very well be worth it, just to avoid the trouble of attempting to clean it.
dont sand it will only make it worse.go to a store that sells flooring and they can better help you.
if you sand a vynil floor you will ruin it. BUT it's already ruined. you need a new floor! i hate that role vynil anyway! a good brand and grade of VCT may be an option.
no. get a new one
i had the same problem with this house, we now have gorgeous hardwoods throughout, but for a time i had to make do with the horrible vinyl tile...i tried tsp it is found at most hardware stores..it worked well, and for the tough stuff i used CLR...also very effective... another thing for the scuff marks from shoes and animals i used mr clean magic erasers.

yES you can sand the floor, but i wouldnt recommend it if you are wanting to keep it, i would only sand it with the entent on covering it up with new tile or possibly paint (in a kitchen it wont last long mind you).

good luck
No you cannot sand it !! You can rent a floor buffer and use those buffing pads(they come in coarse, medium, and fine) and some commercial grade floor stripper. This should take care of the grit but it may or may not help the white tiles. It is also going to take a lot of mopping with fresh water to clean it up as you go. Hope that helps
Try using sudsing ammonia and a plastic pot scrubbing puff. Ammonia will cut through oil and wax-sealed messes easily. Make sure you open all windows when using ammonia.

Once your floor is cleaned, whatever you use, seal the floor with a floor wax made for vinyl floors.
