Are you supposed to wash dishes w/ hot water?

Question:Or is cold water ok too as long as you're using dish soap?

My whole life i've been using cold water (especially when it's like 100 degrees outside) but always hot water when washing greasy stuff.

I just moved in w/ a friend and her boyfriend and they both keep bugging me to use HOT water to wash everything.

I'm just wondering. If they're right then i'll start doing it their way :(

The theory goes that more bacteria are killed by using hot water with dish soap than with cold water and soap. But ... bacteria are EVERYWHERE - in the sink, on the dishrag or sponge, on the dishes, in the air itself! The drawback to using hot water is it will dry out the skin on your hands so you'd either have to use rubber gloves or lots of skin lotion.

My thoughts are, if you haven't gotten sick from dishes washed in cold water with an anti-bacterial dish soap, then changing to hot water won't make that much of a difference! But, in order to placate your roommates, why not use warm water to wash your dishes? Just make sure you use an anti-bacterial dish soap.

You are supposed to use as hot as water as you can put your hands into.
hot water removes grease easier
you should use hot water because it gets rid of most of the germs of coarse you still need to use dish soap to
yes HOT water, the hotter the better...you are washing away germs, bacteria as well as grease.
Hot water is the best to get food off that you can't see. It kills germs and bacteria better than cold water. You have to fill the sink with hot water, and put dish soap in. The only time you can use cold water is when you are rinsing the dishes off. Make sure the water isn't too hot though, or it will burn you.
The heat helps to kill germs. People have cultured germs straight out of soap bottles, so Use Hot Water
You only want to use hot water for those dishes if you want germs and bacteria killed...you know...things like salmonella and e. coli that develop from food left on the dishes after eating, and strep and staph bacterias that make you sick. In fact, in the winter in particular, we put our dishes in the dish washer and turn on the extra heating unit in them to sterilize them. Yes, you wash your dishes in hot water for health sake.
It is important to use hot water to kill germs and bacteria. Get the water as hot as your hands can stand, but not to hot to burn you. Also, you should wash cups and silverware first, bowls and plates second, non-greasy pots third, and last the greasy stuff.
Well, the RIGHT way is certainly with hot/very warm water. This will make sure the dishes are clean, but also make sure that any germs are cleaned away. Rinse with hot water also. Remember, dishwashers use very hot water to ensure the dishes are clean and sanitized.
Hot water usually gets most of the germs and bacteria off of your dishes. It doesn't have to be HOT HOT, luke warm is fine. I found that warm/hot water too seems to dry your dishes faster.
