When buying a new washer and dryer, it is important to check out what kinds of features are important so you have some idea of what you want when you go into the store. As far as what washes better that would be either a front load washer, or an agitator less high efficiency top load washer. However, on the dryer efficiency is not any greater from one brand to another. If there are any particular brands you don't like you may want to check into who makes what. Whirlpool corporation makes: whirlpool, Maytag, amana, Kenmore, roper, and magic chef. Frigidaire makes some Kenmore and GE, and lastly GE makes Hotpoint. From brand to brand the service repair rates are all the same, no brand stands out better than another. Life expectancy is 7-12 years on anything. As far as machines go, the new GE - Hotpoint line is very quiet, while whirlpool is a little noisier however, many of the whirlpool parts are cheaper when you have to repair them . Also be sure and check your dimensions when buying units because some units are bigger than others if you have a tight space. It really comes down to what you want and how much you want to spend.

oh - don't buy LG, if you like the units see if anyone in your area wants to work on them when they have a problem. Nobody wants to work on them.
i have always had good luck with the sears brand. i also take out their warranty . the sears outlet by me has better deals on appliances and they are covered by the same warranty that is offered on the full price ones in the store.
