How to motivate neighbors to be cleaner?

Question:I live in a run down apartment building. My neighbors leave the place dirty- they throw trash on the floor, track mud in the building, etc. Since no one pays the building owner, there's no one that comes here to clean up. I sweep and mop the entry way and the stairs but I wish there was a way to tell my neighbors that they could take more pride in the place that they lived.

Answers:
you can go talk to the city and they can force them also talk to your home owner association if you dont have one get one quick

Hon, teaching slobs to be clean, is like peeing into the wind! Just shut your front door and leave them to grovel in it, or clear out and move to an area where the people are cleaner. There are such places, you know! Have a great day.
How about put up a poster on the bulletin board stating:

How about cleaning this pace up together? Let's all chip in! :)
-Cleaning and mopping floor-__(put name here)_________
-dusting lobby and railings-_____________
-emptying trash cans-______________
you get the picture!
OR hold a meeting and include the landlord.. Put a sign up sheet on the Bulletin board..
OR send a letter to the landlord explaining your concerns and maybe he could hire a cleaner for the weekends.
OR Just find another place to live.. if all else fails. That might be easier in the long run maybe. :) Good luck!
It is really a situation because not all people are brought up with a consciousness for cleanliness and order nor civic responsibility. If you an find an ally or friends (tenants) in that apartment building who share your concern, you could initiate some clean-up campaign by giving an example. Some tenants might follow your lead especially if they realize the benefits of clean environment. But directly telling them to clean-up may not be a good idea and may offend others who might consider it an insult. Another method is to refer the matter to the owner of the building who might be able to arrange for a janitorial or housekeeping service to upkeep the common areas with the tenants contributing a small fee for the service (maybe twice or thrice a week).
