New apartment has a stale smell of paint & years of someone smoking. Is there anything I can do to change this

Question:the carpet is brand new so its not in the carpet. thanks

Answers:
Find a cleaner that won't ruin the paint, and Wash the walls. Pine Sol does the trick really well. Use a cotton towel tied to a mop, and clean the walls with this, open windows, and burn candles. If the smell comes back, you may have to repeat a few times, but it works.

I think if you paint it will Kilz and then with whatever color you like, it will kill the smoke odor. It not only covers stains etc on the walls, I think it will neutralize the odor too.
try to put a can of charcoal and put it inside your room, charcoal absorbs smell...hope it will be ok..
You could use Kilz primer on the walls. Kilz kills all bacteria on the walls and acts as a primer for paint. It smells really strong though. It wears off after about a week and the smoke smell should be gone. Smoke and tar hangs to the walls. Even if you paint, it can seep back through. you can buy Kilz at walmart, kmart, or a local paint store. Good luck!
Try leaving all your windows open for a weekend with some fans on to air-out the smell. Also, always have scented candles or inscents around as well as air-freshening plug-ins.
I suggest getting a sponge mob, bucket of water and a cleaner that won't ruin the paint and wash all the wall surfaces. I like the Method all purpose cleaners that come in different scents, they are non toxic and pretty inexpensive, sold at Target.
If that doesn't get rid of the smell then I would consider talking to management to negotiate new paint.

Hope this helps you. Good Luck!
Explain your concerns with your landlord and ask for credit toward new paint. You can also try to wash your walls with soap and water but this may be time consuming and messy. Because of the new carpet, don't forget to lay down plastic. Good luck
Charcoal absorbs odors.
