Personally, I feel that a child's bedroom should be a calm tranquil environment for them to wind down at the end of the day. If it is at all possible, create a designated playroom or play area in another room of your home and get as many toys out of your child's bedroom as possible.

Whether you are able to have a separate playroom or not, try to keep your child's toys to a minimum. Most people (myself included) tend to overdo it when it comes to toys for our children. Cutting down on the amount of toys will help keep any space looking neater.

Just before each birthday or holiday when gifts will be received sort through your child's toys and either sell or donate any that he has outgrown or has lost interest in. Get your child involved in the process and teach him a valuable life lesson.

Donate any outgrown books to your local library.

Donate any unused or outgrown toys and clothing to charity or to the pediatric ward of your local hospital.

Have an annual garage sale and let your child keep the money earned from the sale of his things. Teach him the value of saving by bringing him to the bank and letting him deposit his own money into his own savings account.

As far as the toys you decide to keep, shelving is always a good place to start. Once you have plenty of shelving you can stack like things together: puzzles in a neat pile, board games in a neat pile, etc.

For bulky items such as legos, or matchbox cars, plastic bins work well. Place the items in the bin and then put the bin on the shelf. Be sure to label the outside of the bin so your child knows exactly what is in it and doesn't have to pull down every bin to find what he is looking for.

I like to use those rubbermaid bins that are in 30 or 15 gallons. They come in handy to keep toys in and they fit perfectly in most closets. I hope that helps.
You could use those wooden rack/shelves with bright colored plastics bins or the shelves with the baskets that fit inside.

when taking car of my 3y/o grandson, this is what i did. KEEP ALL THE PIECES FOR THE TOY TOGETHER, TEACH THEM THAT THIS HAS TO BE DONE. SET TOYS UP LIKE IN A DISPLAY. WHEN TOYS ARE IN A HEAP THIS LOOKS HORRIBLE AND CONFUSES THE CHILD. NEXT ROTATE THE TOYS , LEAVE OUT THE TOYS AND THEY WILL FEEL THAT IT IS LIKE A NEW TOY.GET RID OF BROKEN TOYS AND TOYS THAT THE 3Y/O HAS OUT GROWN, PACK THEM AWAY AND/OR GIVE TO A RESALE STORE TOY STORE OR SALVATION ARMY. I HATE PLAYDOH AND LEGOS ,BLOCKS ETC. REALLY KEEP THEM PACKED AND PUT AWAY. THIS IS SOMETHING YOU OR AN OLDER CHILD CAN DO WITH HIM. THEN PUT THIS AWAY PROMPTLY AND TELL HIM ALL THE PIECES MUST BE PUT AWAY, FOR ISN'T IT GREAT THAT WE HAVE THIS TOY WIH ALL THE PIECES ! ANYWAY GOOD LUCK !

When my son was little we purchased about 10-15 plastic shoeboxes and we separated his toys into similar groups and stored them in the boxes. We took pictures of the contents and put that on the boxes (this made it easier to id what went back where) Larger toys went into one of those totes type containers. He was allowed to get out 1 box at a time. It helped keep things organized and he could easily pick up a smaller mess than 1 huge one. We then stacked all these boxes on shelves we had put in his room. His room stayed about a liveable as possible with 200 million toys. (we NEVER had this many toys - those things breed i think)
