How do you get rid of weird apartment smell?

Question:I just moved into a new apartment and I've been living in it for just under a week now. When I first came in I noticed a weird musty smell but I thought it'd go away after a few days of being lived in. However the smell has only faded a tiny bit. I'm pretty sure it's a combination of things including the carpet but I was wondering what are the best products to buy or even home remedies to get rid of this apartment smell?

Answers:
i lived in an apartment that had a stale smell in it when I moved in. I opened my windows and washed my walls and mopped my floors with OdoBan. (you can even use vinegar and water mixture) Then I sprinkled baking soda on the carpets and vacuumed. The smell didn't return.

Try using baking soda in the carpet that absorbs smells. Try airing it out for a day maybe some good fresh air might also help. Good Luck
Chances are, the place was closed up for a while, so it got "stuffy". Also, the landlord (or previous tenant) probably had the carpet cleaned, which would also contribute to dampness.

The place should air out on it's own eventually, but the carpet will retain the odor for a long time. Instead of using air freshener sprays, try simmering some water with some vanilla extract added (on the stove). That'll cover the musty smell, without leaving a "chemical" smell.
There is a product that some stores sell called "damp rid". It comes in a tub, and you leave it open for a while until the musty smell goes away. I think you can find it at Walmart, Target, Lowes Home Improvement stores.
The first thing you have to do is clean. A clean house won't smell bad. First wash ceilings and walls with ammonia and very hot water ammonia kills almost everything I know that would leave an odor. rent a comercial carpet cleanner and add plain white vinigar to the rince water this will remove all the soap residue and any odors. the smell will go away when it ti dry, don't forget to clean the fringe drip pan that can really give off an odor.
Spray Febreeze everywhere. It worked for me.
Has the carpet been steamed cleaned?Did a smoker live there prior. If so , you may need to paint. Cedar shavings are helpful, but watch around pets and kids....poison.I use a cedar block in my garbage can in the bottom under bad. Vinegar in a bowl will soak up smells, too. The best de-stinker is good ol' sunshine. Open up the place as long as you can. Don't try to cover it up. THe other answer on cleaning is an excellent suggestion. CLean, Clean,Clean.
Had exactly the same problem a few years ago. My mum told me how she used to get the smell of fresh paint out of the air by using open buckets of water. I used this idea and purchsed a few cheap 80c buckets and filled it with water. After a few days the smell was gone. It was soaked up in the water in the buckets. Its cheap, easy and good for the enviorment.
First do a really good cleaning then sprinkle baking soda in the carpet , leave a cut lemon on a dish in the main living area vac um often and wipe down walls if the paint allows
I'd first steam clean the carpet then, I found the perfect product for this and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a natural fragrance free carbon product called FRIDGE IT carbon odor absorbers. Little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and don't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant and gels and oils that say keep away from fabric, pets, etc. Just put a few around the apartment in problem areas like under sink, kitchen, closets, etc. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and internet. Definitely worth trying
