Is it true that if you wash/dry clothes at night is more energy efficient?

Question:I was told by someone once if you wash clothes after 8PM; you save more money on your electric bill than if you were to wash clothes during the day time?!

Answers:
I think what you are talking about is that some electric companies have separate peak and off-peak electric rates. If your power company has such a plan available then electricity will be cheaper during the evening/early morning hours than it is mid-day.

Not all power companies have such plans and it would require a special electric meter on your house. If you are already on such a plan your peak/off-peak usage such be indicated on your bill. If not, check your power company's website to see if they offer time of use billing.

news to me....
The only time I have seen engery being saved is when Ben Franklin came up with day light savings time.

I have never heard of that one.
Well...kind of. If you dry clothes at night during the summer it can be a bit more energy efficient. During the day time, the outside temp is warmer so the air conditioner works harder to keep the house cool. When you dry clothes, the inside temp is a bit warmer, so the air conditioner is working even harder still. At night, it won't have to work so hard because it only has to deal with rising inside temps.

However, unless we're talking about constantly drying loads and loads of laundry every single day, the savings aren't worth it. Do your laundry whenever you need to.
Yes it true. If you put your machine on last thing at night before you go to bed you will save even more energy, The clothes are ready to hang outside first thing. If you can hang them outside even better , you save even more energy by not using the dryer
It's true, the reason is your home won't heat up as much from the dryer, and the hot water used at night, is already in the reservoir. But, if you choose to do laundry in the daytime, don't let the dryer cool off before drying the next load, it will take more power to warm up again.
