Nasty smell in washing machine !?

Question:Any one know how to get rid of musty stale smell inside the drum its horrible?

Answers:
run it on the hottest longest wash with soap powder but no clothes in.
then pour one pint of white vinegar into the drum and run on the longest hottest wash again.

it will clean the machine of all bacteria and clear the pipes of mineral deposits.

try a cycle with bleach in the drawer!!
Small amount of washing powder and a very small amount of bleach put it into machine and select a boil wash. I had to do it recently and it worked.
try putting on a hot wash cycle & not putting the laundry in..just let it run an empty cycle...that might do the trick.
One might try running a cycle of baking soda and warm water through the machine. Another good thing to do is to run a cycle of white vinegar and warm water through the machine. It may require a couple times. And the use of large amts of the white vinegar would help. Be sure to use a warm water in the cycle for maybe the first couple of times.
have you left your socks/pants in it ??
First run your machine on the highest setting , normaly 95Âșc 6&add a cup of bleach, do the same again and add a cup of vinegar, this will give the machine a good clean and will rid the smell
Hot wash but no clothes in the drum. Try adding maybe bicarbonate of soda and maybe even some calgon as well. Good luck.
You need to do a boil wash and add a disinfectant to the drawer, the usual one for washing machines is Zoflora you can buy it it in chemist or supermarket.

It comes in different floral fragrances.

You should really do this once every three months, keep mould and mildew at bay, keeps the inner pipe work clean, and keeps a nice smell in your washing machine.
I agree with everone else but would like to add - Remember to leave the door slightly ajar when the machine is not in use. This allows it to air and avoids the build up of smell.
If you have a look at your outlet pipe from the back of the machine, is it lower than the waste pipe drain? If so the water is probably running from your waste pipe into the washing machine. Check the pipes, if needed tie them up so they are a bit higher than the waste pipe. Put a dishwasher cleaner through it. It should smell fresh in no time. Its also a good idea to check the pump periodically. Sometimes they get clogged with soap scum and limescale. I had this problem for ages and then a plumber told me the cause. My machine doesnt smell anymore.
try a little white wine vinager in the drum of the washing machine, also it might be the waste pipe that goes from your machine to the drain
I assume that it is an automatic. Remove and clean the soap dispenser - the drawer you put the powder in.

Over a period of time soap builds up and will smell.

It is good practice to run washing machines and dish washers without any items in and without soap.every six months. This helps to stop the build up of undissolved soap/conditioners and will stop the smell.
all the above answers are good- but leave the lid to your washer open when not in use, especially if you only do laundry like once a week. there is always some water left in the washer and when it sits all closed up- it gets stagnant. Thus the smell.
I'm very impressed with all your answers on this question! I myself experienced this problem and did exactly what all of you said and it worked. thank you all, take a bow.
Most of the answers are right. You need to do a boil wash at least once a month. It cleans the machine out. This is the problem with modern low temperature powders and machines, They can clog the machine and need very hot water to dissolve what is left in the machine. I used to find this when I had my own business reconditioning domestic appliances
I agree with Peanut. When you are finished with your washing, LEAVE THE WASHER OPEN to prevent that smell!
Run it with soap and hot water and bleach or vinegar without clothes. Also after the water spins out, spray with Febreze.
Make sure you have cleaned out the filter, then make sure you have nothing trapped in the drum like old socks. Put a cupful of Bicarbonate of Soda in the drum and put the machine through a rinse wash, you will then get rid of the smell. Bicarbonate works on drains as well.
Baking Soda is well known for removing odours..
put 1/4 to 1/2 cup in the loading machine...repeat if necessary.
I took out the drawer the other day and found lots of mould,so have a look.
Put machine on highest setting, with detergent,no clothes and let it run.
I also leave the drawer open now, after every wash, after finding so much mould.
fastwash 60 degree, with half a cup of neat bleach. You have mildew in the pips and between the drums.
Take out and saok if possible to powder department, and check and clean the rubber seals around the door area

re-connect and then put the machine onto a 90 degree wash. do not put any washing in the machine. this will destroy bacteria. when i do this i normally use some kind of disinfectant as well in the wash
