Why does new white plastic get gray spots, like smudged all over?


Question:i bought 2 new trash cans and a white toaster from target , and the next day it was like a ghost with dirty hands had touched all over it. it cam e off , but was it like cheap plastic , gas coming out ?? .. ghosts ?? even the toaster got the gray smudge all over it , and it hadnt been touched and was brand new !!? ive googled plastic discoloration , but cant find anything... ??

I have noticed that too. I think it is carbon (ash) from the factory. This is my best guess as it has all the characteristics of soot. It adheres to the plastic because plastic surfaces are films (think of the clingyness of Saran Wrap. It should come off with mild soap and water.


it might be grease on them, and then any dust in the air sticks to them... im not really sure
