Hi,
I live in Sydney Australia and we are on water restrictions. For the last 2 years I have been watering my garden with my washing machine water.
I bought 2 Grey water hoses from Bunnings and joined them together to reach all around the garden. I let the washing machine water empty into my stainless steel tub then I syphon the water out of the tub to water my garden.
Planet Ark make a No phosphate laundry powder and there is another brand, I just can't remember the name. It's in a green box that is NP.
When you are the the laundry detergent section of the supermarket its easy the tell the laundry detergents that have phosphate or No phosphate. Look at the box and you will see the letter (P) for Phosphate and (NP) for No Phosphate.
Australian native plants don't do well with phosphates. I have been watering my garden the Cold power that has phosphate in it and my garden is thriving . I even use the water with fabric softener in it.
Detergents and clothes impart a lot of other stuff to the water which I don't think would be a good idea to put on the food you eat--flowers, I don't know. However, I have used collected rain water and had fantastic results--no chlorine, and it makes the plants thrive.
Many of today's detergents are non-phospherus, such as Sunlight, Tide and the list goes on, as for fabric softeners the only one I can think of that is non-toxic Seventh Generations Fabric softener, it is bio-degradable.
I would recommend seventh generation laundry products, or Imus ranch products. The first can be found at grocery stores, the second at Imusranchfoods.com
