Question:I want to buy a washer and a dryer this weekend... actually have-to buy one this weekend (bought new home and don't have a set). I want to spend about $1200 or less , maybe more if it's a real good deal in the long-run.

You can get really good deals at hometown appliance stores and have dependable service available. You want to make sure the warranty and service contract are good. But don't let them sell you an extended warranty. If there is something wrong with the units it will show up in the first year.
I like local, established dealers because they are right there is you need them. Big stores contract work to whomever and you sometimes have problems that take a while to fix.
Don't worry about the "deals" the big stores offer. They usually have enough profit built in that they could give you a big discount and still make money. If you talk to an appliance salesman they will tell you that most of the washer/dryers are made by about 3 manufacturers. Save money buy passing all the bells and whistles they offer. You probably won't use half of the cycles offered. If you can get them and afford them, Fisher/Paykel makes the best and most efficient units I have ever owned in 50 years of doing laundry. I bought my set for less than you are talking about, so take a look. Don't by the Squirrel-cage dryer, though, it is nice but pricey.
